Sprinkler controls Centerville school fire

Beverly, Mass. -
A sprinkler controlled a small fire in a boys bathroom after school at the Centerville Elementary School.
The fire caused $20,000 in damage, but no one was injured, according to a report from the Beverly Fire Department.
Fire investigators are working with police to determine the cause of the fire, which remains under investigation
The school was evacuated successfully when firefighters arrived and found moderate smoke in a hallway leading to the fire.
Engines 1,3 and 5 responded along with Deputy Chief William Petrosino, Chief Pierce and Lieutenant William Fiore.
Crews ensured the fire was out and pulled down ceilings in order to make sure no fire had advanced above the ceiling where it could spread. No additional fire was found and it was determined that the sprinkler had operated as it should have and kept the fire confined to the area within the room where it started.
The fire occurred after dismissal of students, but there were staff and after school programs in the building.
Staff and children evacuated properly and according to plan, the Fired Department said.
