Sprinkler system extinguishes Brockton pizza oven fire; food ruined by smoke

BROCKTON, MA - A sprinkler system prevented a fire from spreading out of a large industrial pizza oven, but did not save the food in the factory of Uno Foods, 180 Spark St., fire officials said Wednesday.

“Smoke contaminated all the food product, all of which was ordered destroyed by Executive Health Officer Louis Tartaglia,” said Lt. Edward Williams of the Brockton Fire Department’s Fire Prevention Bureau.

More than 100,000 pizzas are made each day at the company’s industrial plant, according to Williams.

The fire was reported at 1:43 a.m. Wednesday as firefighters were responding to a report of a house fire on Blaine Street.

The Uno Foods building was filled with smoke, but the sprinkler system was operating and extinguished the fire, he said. The fire started in electrical components in the area, Williams said.

There was water damage to the electrical components, but the company had crews on hand to begin cleaning. Limited production was operational in the morning, and full production was expected later in the day.
